Judicial Background

  • 2008 - present: Judge, 5th District Court of Appeal. Appointed by Governor Charlie Crist. He won the retention vote in 2010 by 63.36% and 2016 by 67.95%. In 2017, he served a 2-year term as Chief Judge.
  • 1993 - 2008: Circuit Judge, 9th Judicial Circuit Court. Appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles.*
  • 1990 - 1993: County Judge, Orange County. Appointed by Governor Bob Martinez.*

Additional Background

Judge Cohen spent 8 years in private practice before becoming a judge. He focused on family, commercial, personal injury and criminal cases. He gained experience in jury and non-jury trials. As a judge, he helped start a successful Orange County mediation program. The program reduced the court's caseload by using volunteer mediators to find a resolution. He was also involved in setting up the website for the 9th Circuit and he taught in the Justice Teaching program. The program has legal professionals educate K-12 students about our justice system.
