Candidate Background

Judicial Background

  • 2009 - present: Justice, Florida Supreme Court. Appointed by Governor Charlie Crist. He won the retention vote by 66.03% in 2016 and 59.0% in 2010. Starting in 2014, he held the role of Chief Justice for two consecutive 2-year terms, and he is the first Cuban American to hold the position.
  • 1996 - 2009: Circuit Judge, 15th Circuit Judicial Court. Appointed by Governor Lawton Chiles. It appears he ran unopposed in elections while he held this position.

Note: Justice Labarga spent 1 day, January 5, 2009, in the role of Judge, 4th District Court of Appeal before being elevated to the Supreme Court.

Additional Background

Justice Labarga has a variety of legal experience. He started as an Assistant Public Defender (1979-1982) before serving as a prosecutor (1982-1987). After that, he worked in private practice between 1987 and 1996. He specialized in personal injury litigation and criminal defense.

In 2014, he issued an administrative order establishing the Florida Civil Justice Access Commission.

He is less conservative than other Justices and is considered a swing vote.
